Most business owners still check the same numbers every month: traffic, bounce rate, session duration, and conversion rate. Those numbers still matter. But AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, and Perplexity now answer questions and recommend businesses before anyone clicks a link. That changes what your numbers mean, and it means your reports can miss part of the story.
People are getting answers without visiting a website. A Pew Research Center study of 900 U.S. adults found that users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, compared with 15% when it did not. The data covers March 2025 in the U.S., but the direction is clear.
For a business, this means a customer can hear your name, compare you with others and form an opinion before they ever reach your site. That discovery will not appear in your traffic report.
Instead of only asking how many people visited, ask:
You do not need special software to start.
1. Write down five questions a customer would ask, such as “best web developer in Harare” or “who can build a website for my small business”.
2. Ask each question in ChatGPT, Google (look for the AI Overview) and Perplexity.
3. Note whether your business is named, and which competitors are.
4. Check your analytics for visits from AI tools, which often show up as referral traffic from sources like chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai.
5. Repeat monthly and keep the results in a simple sheet, so you can see change over time.
If you are not mentioned, that is useful information. Clear service pages, consistent business details and helpful, specific content give AI tools more to work with.

Imagine two scenarios (illustrative numbers). In the first, 1,000 people visit your site and almost none get in touch. In the second, 300 visitors arrive who already understand what you do, and many enquire. The second business is healthier, even though its traffic is lower.
As AI tools filter and pre-qualify people before they reach you, the visitors who do click are often more interested. Judge your website by the enquiries and customers it produces, not by volume alone.
